SLC39A8 Acts as a manganese and zinc influx transporter. Plays a role in manganese reabsorption in the proximal tubule of the kidney and in manganese uptake into the brain. Belongs to the ZIP transporter (TC 2.A.5) family. Expressed in thymus, placenta, lung, liver, pancreas and, to a lower extent, in spleen, testis, ovary, small intestine, colon, leukocyte, heart.
